Growing up is never easy, particularly for a young person whose parents have divorced. For young Callum, the experience is exasperated by several factors, the least of which is his certain knowledge that fate had played a trick on him and made his body a different gender to his mind.
Add to this the awful responsibility of discovering his father is not only having an affair with his secretary, but is planning to run away with her to South America, leaving him and his American born mother in the lurch with just debts to content with. He also discovers that his father has been fiddling the books at the London bank in which he works, to the tune of many millions of pounds.
What does one do?
Callum did what he thought was best, he reported his findings to the Serious Fraud Office. Now he has to live with the consequences.
Callum might be screwed up, but he's not stupid, so he retains two insignificant pieces of evidence that later might just lead to a fortune. For his father not only stole from the bank, he stole from some very dangerous people, who could never report the theft, for obvious reasons, as terrorism and drug dealing are rarely seen as legitimate means of doing business.
The problem is, those men have one avenue left to follow - Callum and his mother, for both his father and his secretary are now in prison.
Life just keeps on getting more complicated.

First off I must congratulate Tanya Allan on her research. I live on Vancouver Island and her description of Tofino and Long Beach is right on. I can only conclude she actually did visit us and talked to the locals. Her description of Josh is accurate in that it is like so many Canadians I know. Her description of Grand Cayman is accurate from my memory of many years ago.
I enjoyed Her story of Cally (The young man transitioning). It was very thoughtful on Tanya Allan's part to give a complete and I hope accurate description of the hormones needed for boys to transition.
Definitely one of the better stories I have read on transitioning people and I would recommend it to young adult readers who may be considering this lifestyle choice.
Another great read by Tanya Allan. Her expertise in numerous subject matter and her ability to make her characters come to life is unparalleled.
This is the story of person, born in the wrong body, who overcomes adversity, growing up to become a lovely young woman. In the process she ingeniously unlocks a secret to finding a multimillion dollar stash and makes peace with her remaining emotional demons. Another fine Tanya Allan novel.
I kind of expected a bit more action, more of an going a bad guys searching for a boy when they should be looking for girl sort of hide and seek story. Still another good story from Tanya Allan with some action and self discovery plus a few twists and turns.
Tanya isn't just a genre author, she writes very good adventure, thriller, mystery and romances. Sometimes so sappy as to send me into a diabetic coma but that is often just what I need in a book. As with most of her books this one was too short, not becasue it didn't finish all the plot points, it did, I was just disapointed that it ended too soon, I wanted the experience to last longer. Tanya was smart enough to price the book at 3.99 so I didn't feel ripped off like I have for some kindle books that are 9.99 for only 35,000 words.
The beginning of this story was a little off putting for me, but based on my experiences with Tanya's other works I continued reading having made the assumption that the book would be up to her usual standards.
I was of course proven to be correct. Tanya uses multiple changes in the timeline - this book being anything but linear - but it works to good effect as the story develops.
The main character, Cally, narrates her own story - jumping back and forth through her life to fill in the blanks for the reader. It proves to be an interesting method of writing, although it does require that the reader pay attention to the story. My personal opinion of the technique is that it kept the story interesting for me and kept me guessing as to what was around the next page turn.
Cally spends the better part of her young life dealing with her own gender and sexuality issues, all while dealing with a dirtbag of a father who gets caught (with Cally's help) stealing from his clients and with plans to run out on his family with his younger secretary, leaving his wife and child not only broke, but holding the bag as his less than savory clients decide to get their funds back.
Cally and her mother must not only survive by their own wits, but Cally must find her own way through life with the help of her mother.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book - it was a joy to read.
